Angels Are With You Now

It’s hard not to be scared when it comes to spiritual stuff, because the media has always portrayed it as frightening. If you’ve seen the famous angel scene in the film Angels in America, you’ll know it’s hardly a subtle sequence when Prior, the protagonist, has an encounter with an angel. And if you haven’t seen the film (you should), it starts with the entire room vibrating, the lampshade bursting into flames, and the bed starting to shake and almost levitate. Prior hangs on to it like he’s on a surfboard on top of an uncontrollable wave. Finally the roof is ripped off and falls all around him. He looks up, covered in dust, to see an angel with giant widespread wings coming down, proclaiming< “The messenger has arrived.”

I don’t know about you, but that would freak me out! And this king of portrayal is common throughout all kinds of books and films, with characters shown as victims of circumstances rather than creator of their own narrative.  Many of us have learned that if we come into contact with a being from outside our material world, we’ll be victims as well.

And there’s more. Many religions teach that psychic experiences including speaking to spirits, are demonic. Although in Catholicism the “Guardian Angel Prayer” is a favorite of many. Baptists will tell you not to speak directly to your angel. Those of us who grew up in more traditional religious spaces often heard, “You shouldn’t be meddling with anything unseen! That’s a sin. That’s devil worship. Satanic.”

Okay-that’s a little creepy. No wonder we’re a little bit afraid. The patriarchy wants to keep us feeling powerless, and this dynamic is reinforced through the king of imagery that depicts encounters with the unseen as traumatic, overwhelming, and out of our control. All kinds of people stand to gain a lot by keeping us in the dark about our own power. We’re easier to repress and govern when we’re scared and feel we can’t make decisions about our own lives. When we become our own seers, on the other hand, we’re tasked with taking the lead in our own life. (For some, that’s really scary!)

So, with all these frightening portrayals and devil-worship warnings, why aren’t more people saying that it can feel scary to think about seeing an angel? I’ve started to think a big reason is because fear is seen as weak. It can still be present, of course. But at one time I used to wonder, Am I the only one who’s scared? Does anyone else feel this way?

I think there a lot we can learn by looking directly into this fear. I mean we’re talking about something pretty powerful here.

Angels won’t come into your life unless you give them permission. In fact, if any kind of energy comes into your space and you don’t want it there, you can decide not to welcome it.

When we acknowledge the angels around us, when we let love in, despite the fear, we’re inviting light. We’re learning how to become light. And eventually there’s so much light and love, there’s no room for fear.

A lot of us are so scared of being scared that we stop ourselves from having an experience that would bring us peace and happiness. We resist entering a sanctuary that’s available to us at any hour, in any space.

You do have a choice. You can live passively, or actively. You can let others dictate your life’s course, or you an decide to raise your vibration and get in there and start making things happen. Angels will be with you no matter what you decide, not even a heartbeat away.

If you want to be in touch with them, then I invite you to enter a quieter realm. Feelings, emerge when we give them time, and for me, feelings are at the heart of angel relationships, as they’re at the heart of any relationship.

I hope the guidance I provide and the questions I consider in this book will help you develop a closer relationship with angels, but you should know from the start that they’ve always been beside you.
