Amethyst is the royal member of the Quartz family with a trigonal crystal system and a hardness of 7 on the Moth scale. It is found in many places, significantly throughout the Western Hemisphere, best specimens from Brazil and Uruguay, also Africa and Russia.

In ancient Rome only the nobility and the senators of the forum were allowed to wear amethyst.  It is said that wearing amethyst will help the person overcome and end bad habits.  The ancient Greeks believed Amethyst would prevent intoxication, calm anger and relieve frustrated passion.
