            Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 - 1891)

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (known to students the world over fondly as HPB) was born August 12, 1831, at Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, daughter of Colonel Peter Alexeyevich von Hahn and novelist Helena Andreyevna de Fadeyev). In 1849 she married N. V. Blavatsky, and shortly thereafter began more than 20 years of extensive travel, bringing her into contact with mystic traditions the world over. Principal founder of The Theosophical Society in New York City in 1875 devoting her extraordinary literary talents to its humanitarian purposes until her death in London, England, on May 8, 1891.

          Grace P. Knoche
             (1909 - 2006)
Dr. Grace F. Knoche born in 1909 at the Theosophical Headquarters, at Point Loma and attended the Raja-Yoga School and Academy. She joined the TS in 1929 and under G. de Purucker, and worked at the headquarters on the Leader's secretarial staff. She assisted Dr. de Purucker in revising the Encyclopedic Glossary and was on the committees responsible for reorganizing his Esoteric School materials,later published as The Dialogues of G. de Purucker (1948) and Fountain-Source of Occultism (1974). Dr.  Knoche received her Ph.D at Thheosophical University, in 1944. At various times from 1933 to 1946 she taught violin, Greek, Sanskrit, Hebrew, Bible translation, and Qabbalah at Theosophical University, and painting and sculpture at the Lomaland school.
On Mr. Long's death in 1971, Grace assumed leadership of the TS and became editor of Sunrise.  Always a collaborator at heart, Grace worked to establish a spirit of cooperation among the various theosophical organizations. She died in Altadena, California, on February 18, 2006, at the age of 97.
